Above Grade Pipe Insulation Thickness Calculation (Demo)

Fluid in exposed pipelines will freeze when the available heat represented by the degrees of fluid temperature above the freezing point has been lost. Heat loss may be caused by radiation, convection, and conduction through the pipe wall and insulation, if any, and through the fluid film adjacent to the pipe wall. This tool was developed using calculation methods published in AWWA M11 to verify the heat balance of your above grade pipeline and determine suitable pipe insulation material and thickness, if required.
